Family history

The family originated from the wide region of Lippstadt and Rheda in Germany. The name Johann Galgenkamp emerges in Wiedenbruck in 1470, but the first Gallenkamp family member we have data on, is Jobst. He was born in 1515 in Lippstadt and was butcher and member of the city council. A lot of Gallenkamps in Lippstadt where butchers, up till now the name Gallenkamp dominates the butchers guild of witch you can find the history in the 'Metzgerambthaus' in Lippstadt.

Jobst Gallenkamp is one of three forefathers. The other two are Henrich (Hinnerk) Gallenkamp and Hermann Gallenkamp.
On this page you see the coats of armour of the three family branches.

Gallenkamp to The Netherlands

In the 18th century Amsterdam became a save haven for Gallenkamp from several branches, and over the years it got the 2nd important Gallenkamp city after Lippstadt.

One of the German immigrants was my forefather: Gerardus Gallenkamp.

In 1750 he came from Wadersloh near Lippstadt to Amsterdam. As a 'sugar baker' he subscribed as  'Poorter' of the city. Unlike most of the Gallenkamp from the Lippstadt branches, he was a catholic.

It was Jacob Galenkamp from Amsterdam who lost an 'L' from his name and moved to Hasselt. This town became the residence of the dutch reformed branch of the family.

A fair part of the genealogy data on this website originally comes from the elaborate work of the late PhD. Friedrich Gallenkamp, that was written down in the Gallenkamp 'Geslechterbuch'. This website makes it accessible to anyone interested in the Gallenkamp family.
